The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has urged the Federal Government to focus on addressing economic hardship, insecurity, and the rising cost of living facing Nigerians.
According to Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said this in reaction to recent comments by the Presidency on Nigeria’s borrowing profile, which suggested that Nigeria’s borrowing level is lower than that of some African countries.
Atiku argued that economic policies should be assessed based on their impact on citizens’ welfare and national development and that borrowing should be tied to productive investments capable of improving infrastructure, agriculture, security, and economic growth.
He accused the federal government of celebrating indebtedness like an economic achievement, while ignoring the plight of Nigerian citizens.
