An island country in the South Pacific Ocean, Fiji has declared a national HIV emergency following a sharp increase in infections.
The minister of health and medical services in Fiji, Dr Ratu Lalabalavu, announced this on Wednesday via social media saying an outbreak-level response is no longer sufficient to address what he described an “epidemic”.
He said formally declaring HIV a national health emergency recognises the seriousness of the epidemic and the urgent coordinated response that his country now needs.
The health minister said the government estimates that one in every 60 adults in Fiji is now living with HIV.
