WHO Says Global Malaria Deaths Have Reduced Since Covid 19

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said Global deaths from Malaria have reduced to the way they were before the coronavirus crisis.

A member of the WHO’s Global Malaria Programme, Arnaud Le Menach, said this to newsmen this Wednesday, saying although there were 263 million cases of malaria worldwide in 2023, the death toll has remained stable.

Le Menach says the Covid-19 pandemic had caused an additional 55,000 malaria-related deaths in 2023.

However, he says the deaths have reduced to the numbers that were recorded before the coronavirus pandemic.

The WHO says despite the reduction in global malaria deaths, the estimated malaria death rate in Africa is still too high, saying the rollout of malaria vaccines will help to save tens of thousands of young lives every year.
