Sudan’s military has confirmed the withdrawal of its forces from the western city of El-Fasher, its last stronghold in the Darfur region. The move comes after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, RSF, declared full control of the city.

Army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said he approved the withdrawal to prevent further systematic destruction and killing of civilians as fierce clashes continued in the area.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has raised alarm over reports of atrocities by the RSF and is calling for safe passage for thousands of civilians trapped in El-Fasher. The RSF, however, denies targeting civilians.

With the fall of El-Fasher, the RSF now controls all five state capitals in Darfur, tightening its grip on the region. The city’s capture marks a major turning point in Sudan’s civil war, which has killed more than 150,000 people and displaced about 12 million since April 2023.
