The Supreme Court in South Korea has upheld the ruling of a Central District Court which sentenced prominent opposition leader Cho Kuk to 2 years imprisonment for forging academic documents to secure his children’s admission to prestigious schools.
The Supreme Court affirmed the lower court’s ruling which was given in 2023, this Thursday saying that it finds the charges of obstruction of business, and public and private document forgery against the defendant to be valid
Cho was appointed to lead the justice ministry in 2019, but was shortly after entangled in a scandal over his children’s education.
Reports say Cho, who was a possible candidate for president, will lose his parliamentary seat because of the Supreme Court verdict. He is expected to report to a correctional facility to begin his sentence.
Reports say Cho is one of the prominent opposition personalities at the forefront of efforts to impeach South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol following his brief imposition of martial law last week.
