Rivers State Chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has urged politicians in that state to refrain from dragging the judiciary into their political disputes.
The Chairman, Okrika Branch, Tamunosiki Roberts, said this to newsmen after a joint statement was released by the chairmen of the eight NBA branches in that state.
Roberts says the attention of the NBA was drawn to a call by the House of Assembly on the Department of State Security, DSS, to investigate the Chief Judge of the State, Simeon Amadi, saying the development is unfortunate.
He emphasized that the judiciary is an independent arm of government and must remain free from political interference, saying the only body constitutionally empowered to handle disciplinary matters involving judges is the National Judicial Council (NJC).
He says that the independence of the Judiciary is crucial to the sustenance of peace and stability in that State, saying leave the judiciary as its stability is crucial to the economy of that State and the Country.
