Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that the recent violent attack in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area, during the Onwa Asaa traditional festival, is suspected to be a result of a cult-related clash.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, said this to newsmen on Sunday, saying the violence is a result of a suspected dispute between rival cult groups. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, left scores dead after gunmen opened fire on festival attendees.
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional police operatives to the affected area to restore calm and prevent further violence.
The security operatives have also assured residents that efforts are underway to ensure justice is served and the safety of the community is restored.
