Former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has sounded the alarm over the worsening state of Nigeria’s education sector, calling it a crisis of great magnitude that urgently requires national intervention.
Obi shared his concerns on X this Thursday, in reaction to recent revelations by the Universal Basic Education Commission, which reported that over 20 million Nigerian children are currently out of school, with many more unable to read or write despite being enrolled.
Obi says the statistics were also mirrored by WAEC, referencing the latest WASSCE results which he described as the worst academic performance in five years.
Obi attributed this to the misplacement of national priorities, lamenting that leaders continue to spend trillions on infrastructures, most of which he says contribute little or nothing to the measurable development index.
He called for a shift in focus, urging the government to redirect resources towards building functional schools and expanding access to quality learning for all Nigerian children.
