The family of a Nigerian businessman and logistics operator, Nnamdi Okafor, who is currently detained in Ethiopia, has appealed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to secure his release alleging that he was framed for drug trafficking after a consignment he was hired to deliver was found to contain cocaine.

Speaking to newsmen during the weekend, Okafor’s brother, Onyebuchi, said Nnamdi, was given a consignment of stockfish to deliver, but was unaware that the consignment contained cocaine, which then led to his arrest and detention in Ethiopia.

According to Onyebuchi, the family reported the matter to the police, who investigated the case and arrested the person who allegedly gave Nnamdi the consignment.

He, however, alleged that despite the arrest and evidence which, according to the family, points to Nnamdi’s innocence, the investigative report has not been forwarded to the Ethiopian authorities by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

Onyebuchi appealed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, to intervene and help secure Nnamdi’s release saying his brother’s continued detention has affected his business, clients and health.

Also speaking, the Head of Nze na Ozo title holders in Iriowelle Village, Awka-Etiti, Emma Okudo, vouched for Okafor’s integrity, saying he has known Nnamdi for years and that he had never been involved in any fraudulent activity.

Nnamdi Okafor was reportedly arrested in March 2026 and has spent about six months in detention in Ethiopia.

The family is now urging the Federal Government to intervene, transmit the relevant investigative findings to the Ethiopian authorities, and help ensure that Okafor receives a fair hearing and, if cleared of the allegations, be released.
