The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reiterated that no herbal product will receive full approval without undergoing properly designed clinical trials to scientifically prove its safety and efficacy.
NAFDAC’s media consultant, Sayo Akintola, and the Director-General of NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye, said that Nigerian herbal medicine practitioners have the expertise to formulate safe and effective natural remedies comparable to global standards.
Adeyeye said that scientific validation through clinical trials remains the key requirement for approval, saying that the agency currently operates two levels of approval for herbal medicines.
She also identified the high cost of clinical trials as a major obstacle discouraging many practitioners from scientifically validating their products.
