The governor of Enugu state, Peter Mbah, has commenced the payment of gratuities to workers in the state civil service who retired from January this year.

The state Accountant General, Anthony Okenwa, says that the government began with retirees who had passed through biometric verification mandated by the governor to eliminate ghost workers from the payroll and pensions records.

Okenwa says that the backlog of gratuities between 2010 and 2024 had been frozen for verification of workers who retired within the period.

Recall that Mbah, while campaigning for governor in 2023, promised to clear the arrears of pensions and gratuities inherited from past administrations in that state.
