The government of Somalia says Somali and US forces have killed 12 militants in an air strike carried out in an area said to be under attack from the Al-Shabaab Islamist group.
Somali’s information ministry announced this on X, this Thursday, saying the strike was launched on Wednesday night by Somali armed forces and the US Africa Command and it was to neutralize the threat posed by Al Shabaab.
The ministry says the targeted strike hit a site used by the militants as a gathering and hideout, and senior leaders of Al-Shabaab were among the 12 eliminated.
Reports say the strike occurred on Adan Yabaal, which is a key town used as a base by Somali military commanders, but was recently raided by Al-Shabaab fighters.
Recall that Somali government forces took control of Adan Yabaal from Al-Shabaab in December 2022 during a major offensive backed by African Union peacekeeping forces.
