Guinea Military Propose Presidential Term of Seven Years

Guinea’s ruling military has said it wants to extend presidential terms from five to seven years, with a two-term limit.

This is according to a draft constitution due to be put to a referendum in September.

The draft was reportedly presented to the head of the military that ousted President Alpha Conde in 2021, General Mamadi Doumbouya, however it did not state whether Doumbouya would be able to run for president when the country returned to democratic elections.

Although Doumbouya had initially pledged not to run in a future presidential vote, reports say the series of high-profile figures close to the military have recently said they would support his candidacy.
