Dozens Of Soldiers Sized In Colombian Mountains
A Colombian Army infantry squad moves through a movement to contact exercise during training lanes at Exercise Southern Vanguard 23 at Tolemaida Military Base, Colombia, Nov. 12, 2022. Exercise Southern Vanguard is U.S. Army South’s premier training exercise taking place at the operational and tactical levels intended to increase interoperability between the United States and Western Hemisphere forces. This year’s iteration, Exercise Southern Vanguard 23, involves Soldiers from U.S. Army South and the U.S. Army National Guard training alongside Colombian Army soldiers in varying terrain while conducting weapon familiarization lanes culminating in a bilateral military training operation.

Colombia’s military says 57 soldiers have been kidnapped by civilians in the country’s south-western Micay Canyon area.

Brig Gen Federico Mejia said that four non-commissioned officers and 53 soldiers had been seized over the weekend.

Mejia says that 31 soldiers were seized on Saturday while the rest were abducted on Sunday by a group of more than 200 people.

He says that the civilians are acting under pressure from rebels of the Farc rebel group which agreed a peace deal with the government in 2016.
