China has responded to a threat from the United States President Donald Trump, to impose an extra 10 percent tariff on countries aligning with BRICS.

BRICS is an intergovernmental organization comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and six other countries. They are currently holding a summit in Rio de Janeiro where they slammed Trumps’ tariffs.

In response, Trump said his administration would consider additional tariffs targeting the BRICS group accusing them of “anti-Americanism”.

However, Chinas’ foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning says they are not seeking confrontation as trade and tariff wars have no winners and protectionism offers no way forward.

Ning also defended the group saying it is an important platform for cooperation between emerging markets and developing countries, and it does not engage in camp confrontation and is not targeted at any country.
