The Court of Appeal in Abuja has agreed to allow the Federal Government and former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, to pursue an out-of-court settlement regarding an appeal against his removal as Chief Justice.
Reports say that at the court proceedings in the appeal this Thursday, Onnoghen’s lead counsel, James Onoja informed the panel that discussions between the parties on a peaceful resolution of the dispute has progressed positively, saying that they have engaged in talks right up until September 18.
The Federal government lawyer Tijani Gazali also confirmed the government’s intention to resolve the matter outside the courtroom.
Onoja and Gazali then appealed to the appellate court for a one-month adjournment for final settlement of the matter.
Justice J. O. Oyewole, who presided over the proceedings, directed both parties to file a documented settlement agreement once reached and adjourned the matter till November 4.
