The Onitsha Main Market has been blocked by officers of the Anambra Police command who are enforcing the one-week closure of the market ordered by the state governor, Chukwuma Soludo.

Recall that Governor Soludo, during an on-site inspection of the market on Monday, ordered the closure after traders and market leadership refused to open for business, ignoring repeated government appeals to resume normal economic activity.

Soludo warned that the closure could be extended if traders fail to comply with the directive.

The state government said that the continuous Monday sit-at-home costs Anambra State about 8 billion naira weekly, and the South East region 19.6 billion naira, while disrupting work and other economic activities.

The Anambra Police prevented anybody from moving into the market premises while the shops remained locked, while assuring members of the public that the situation in Onitsha and across Anambra State remains calm and under control.
