Akande Says Babalola has Right to Seek Redress against Defamation

Former spokesman to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande, has said Afe Babalola has the right to seek redress over the alleged defamation against him.

Akande shared this on X this Thursday, however he condemned the use of state machinery and police to harass activist lawyer, Dele Farotimi, over the alleged defamation.

Recall that some police officers arrested Farotimi and arraigned him before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate Court for allegedly defaming Babalola’s character. Farotimi was said to have defamed Babalola in his recently published book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.

Akande says the matter ought to have been pursued via civil means as he recalled how Lagos and Edo states have decriminalized defamation.

Meanwhile, the Social and Economic Rights Accountability Project, SERAP, has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to release activist Dele Farotimi.
