The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described the federal government’s $1 billion household prosperity and economic social protection project (HOPE-SP) as a response to its presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar’s proposal for a targeted production subsidy.

The former vice-president recently pledged to restore the petrol subsidy if elected, proposing a targeted, capped, transparently budgeted and independently audited intervention to support domestic refining and production.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC national publicity secretary, said the initiative, launched on Wednesday, was an attempt by President Bola Tinubu’s administration to respond to the hardship caused by its economic reforms ahead of the 2027 elections.

The federal government launched HOPE-SP in Abuja, with the ministry of humanitarian affairs and poverty reduction describing it as a shift from palliatives to sustainable pathways for recovery, empowerment and self-reliance.
