‘Not while I’m governor’ — Alia rejects FG’s plan to cede Benue land for ranching

Hyacinth Alia, governor of Benue, says no ranch will be established in the state without the consent of his administration and the people.

Speaking on Tuesday at a town hall meeting with stakeholders from Katsina-Ala, Ukum and Logo federal constituency, Alia said the people of Benue would resist any attempt by external forces to take their land for ranching.

The governor’s remark follows the federal government’s proposed ranching policy, which is aimed at addressing the persistent farmer-herder crisis that has led to deaths and the displacement of communities in Benue and other parts of the country.

The federal government had said the ranching programme would begin with a pilot project in Plateau before being extended to Benue, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Adamawa and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
