NYSC says no corps member raped in Akwa Ibom

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has described as untrue reports that some 21 female corps members were raped during an attack carried out on Wednesday “by thieves”.
The Akwa Ibom State Coordinator of NYSC, Chinyere Ekwe, made the clarification this Thursday, in Abuja, saying she visited the Corps Members, in the company of the State Police Commissioner, Olatoye Durosinmi, for an on-the-spot assessment.
It was discovered that an attack on them was actually carried out by thieves at about 1 am this morning, but only their valuables including phones, laptops and some cash were taken but no bodily harm was meted on them, and no corps member was raped.
Also, the State Commissioner of Police assured the Corps Members and members of the public that an investigation on the matter has been launched and that the culprits will soon be apprehended.
Lagos police intensifies action against Black Axe Day celebration

The Lagos State Police Command says efforts had been intensified to clamp down on suspected cultists planning to celebrate the 7/7 Neo Black Movement of Africa Day, otherwise known as the Black Axe Day in the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, says credible intelligence at the disposal of the command revealed that some hoodlums and cultists had perfected plans to celebrate the Black Axe Day this Thursday, July 7, 2022.
Hundeyin says the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, has warned the groups to shelve their plans, also warning hoteliers not to allow their facilities be used for any cult-related gathering as owners of such facilities will be liable to prosecutions.
Consequently, the command’s tactical teams, Area Commanders and DPOs in collaboration with other sister agencies are fully prepared to clamp down heavily on organizers, leaders and progenitors of such sinister groups aiming to cause violence in the state
Soludo Dismisses Allegation of Budget Padding

Anambra state governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has dismissed allegations of budget padding for some projects by margins as wide as 300 per cent in some ministries.
This is contained in a statement released this Thursday, by his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime.
Soludo attributes the allegations to criminals of different types displaced by his government who are fighting back with propaganda.
He said the claims that the commissioner for works refused to appear before the House of Assembly to defend his ministry’s budget on June 29 is false.
Soludo went further to provide the cost trend of road projects executed in the state which he said ranged from above N200 million to as much as N1 billion per kilometer in 2018 when diesel was N120 per litre and a tonne of asphalt, N18,000.

Residents have been told to leave Ukraine’s eastern city of Slovyansk, a day after two people were killed in a Russian attack on a market.
With Russian forces now controlling the nearby Luhansk region, UK defence intellligence says Slovyansk is likely to be the next focus of the fight for Donbas, the industrial area comprising Luhansk and Donetsk.
Russian forces also continued shelling Mykolaiv, a strategic city in the south where Ukraine is blocking an advance on the port city of Odesa.

A former Deputy National Chairman of the Labour Party, Calistus Okafor, says he has spent N48 million in his case challenging the legality of the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee of the party in Court.
He also declared that Peter Obi’s claim of being the presidential candidate, is still contentious, while reiterating the readiness of his faction’s NWC to open discussions with Obi.
Obi emerged as the candidate of the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party.
Okafor who stated this in an interview with journalists in Abuja said having sold his house in Gwarinpa, he is ready to sell another house in Wuse 2 to continue fighting.
UK, US warn residents against travel near Kuje prison, 19 states

The United States Embassy has warned its citizens in Nigeria against travelling on the airport road in Abuja.
The warning came after suspected terrorists attacked Kuje prison and freed inmates.
Also, United Kingdom citizens are warned to be cautious of travelling to 19 states in Nigeria.
Among the states are Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara and riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River.
They are advised to only embark on essential travel to Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa , Niger, Sokoto, Kogi, within 20km of the border with Niger in Kebbi State, Abia and non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Plateau, and Taraba.
Obaseki can’t ban union activities in AAU – ASUU

The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Emmanuel Osodeke, on Wednesday, said the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has no constitutional right to proscribe union activities in the state-owned institution, Ambrose Alli University.
The ASUU president, who disclosed this when he led other national delegates of the union in solidarity protest to the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, over their unpaid salaries and other sundry issues, said ASUU is a registered body that has the right to operate in the country.
Corroborating the national president, and the immediate past president, Biodun Ogunyemi, says the union needs to rise up against the action of the state governor for proscribing union activities in the university in order to deter other state governors for emulating the bad gesture.
