The United States has promised to provide any necessary assistance to Taiwan following the huge earthquake that injured hundreds and killed at least nine people.

The US National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said this on Wednesday, also saying they are monitoring reports of the earthquake impacting Taiwan and will continue to monitor its potential impact on Japan as well.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration says rescue teams are still trying to reach more than 100 people trapped however it says efforts have been hampered by more than 50 aftershocks recorded since the quake struck on Wednesday and more aftershocks are predicted to happen over the next four days.
