Iran’s Vice-President for strategic affairs, Mohammad Zarif has announced his resignation from the post less than two weeks after he was appointed by Iran’s new President, Masoud Pezeshkian

Zarif is also Iran’s former foreign minister famous for negotiating a landmark 2015 nuclear-deal with major world powers.

Zarif announced his resignation in a post on X, stating several reasons for his resignation, most notably his disappointment with the lineup in the newly proposed 19-member cabinet.

Irans’ President Pezeshkian presented his cabinet on Sunday which included only one woman and reports say the proposed list drew some criticisms

Zarif says he is ashamed that he could not achieve the inclusion of women, youth and ethnic groups in the cabinet as he had promised.

He said he will return to academia and focus less on Iran’s domestic politics.
