Thai Court Orders Dissolution Of Anti-Establishment Election Winner

Thailand’s Constitutional Court has ordered the dissolution of the anti-establishment opposition party, Move Forward.

The ruling was given this Wednesday with the court saying that the party’s campaign to amend a law that protects the monarchy from criticism risked undermining the democratic system.

In a unanimous ruling, the judges said the Move Forward party, which won the most seats in the 2023 election, had improperly used the monarchy to gain an election advantage, putting the palace in conflict with the people.

Recall that the same court had six months ago ordered the Move Forward party to drop its plan to reform a law on royal insults, ruling it as unconstitutional and tantamount to undermining the system of governance with the king as head of state. The ruling also includes a 10-year political ban on 11 party executives.
