The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has expressed concern over the ongoing protests in Nigeria, which has resulted in violence, deaths, and destruction of property.
The ECOWAS commission made this known to newsmen this Tuesday.
The commission says it recognizes the right of citizens to peaceful protests, as contained in the Nigerian Constitution and guaranteed by the 2001 ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
However, it says protesters and all stakeholders need to heed the President’s call for inclusive dialogue to address grievances and ensure peace and security in Nigeria and the ECOWAS region at large.
The commission also extended its condolences to the bereaved families, the Government and Nigerians over the lives lost in the course of the protest.
