Hundreds of protesters have successfully breached the compound of the Sri Lanka prime minister, Ranil Wickre-Mesinghe’s office and entered the premises this Wednesday.
Police stationed outside the prime minister’s office fired several rounds of tear gas in a bid to send them away, but protesters were undeterred and finally surged into the compound by scaling the walls and entering through the gate.
A handful of protesters in the capital Colombo have also entered the premises of state broadcaster, Sri Lanka Rupavahini this Wednesday, and taken over the facility.
This development comes after the nation’s president, Gotabaya Raja-paksa fled the country for the Maldives last night, and the prime minister declared a nationwide state of emergency and imposed a curfew in the western province in Sri Lanka.
