Some brickmakers may have lost their lives after a sand excavation site collapsed in Ridawa village, located in the Ghari Local Government Area of Kano State, on Wednesday.
Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred while workers were digging a pit for local brick production when then pit suddenly caved in, trapping several labourers under heaps of sand and debris.
Some residents and fellow workers rushed to the scene in an attempt to rescue those trapped although the rescue efforts were largely carried out with rudimentary tools.
The member represents the Ghari/Tsanyawa Federal Constituency, Sani Bala, called for professional intervention to help with rescue efforts saying that around 10 individuals may still be trapped underground.
