Rwanda Remembers Genocide Victims With Week Of Mourning

Rwanda has begun a week of national mourning to commemorate victims of the genocide that occurred in the country, 30 years ago.

 

The genocide which lasted for 100 days claimed the lives of 800,000 people.

 

The ceremonies which began on Sunday, April 7, began with President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame lighting a remembrance flame at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where more than 250,000 victims are believed to be buried.

 

Reports say, throughout the week of mourning, national flags will be flown at half-mast, music will not be allowed in public places or on the radio, while sports events and movies are banned from TV broadcasts unless connected to the week of mourning.
