Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted his troops will advance on the Gazan city of Rafah, defying pleas to reconsider.

However, French President Emmanuel Macron is among those cautioning Netanyahu off, telling him the human cost of Israel’s operation in Gaza was “intolerable”.

Meanwhile 1.4 million Palestinians are sheltering in Rafah, which has already come under bombardment.
