A court in Nouak-chott, the capital city of Mauritania, on Monday has sentenced former president Mohamed Ould Aziz to five years in prison for having abused his position to amass illicit funds.

Aziz has been on trial since January 24, alongside 10 others including two former prime ministers, for illicit enrichment, abuse of functions, influence-peddling and laundering.

The court also ordered the confiscation of Aziz’s illicitly acquired assets.
