The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is currently meeting with a delegation from the African Union election monitoring team, led by the former Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Reports say the National Commissioner, Rhoda Gumus, is representing the INEC chairman at the meeting.

The meeting is reportedly to discuss INEC’s preparations for the election, especially in areas such as the application of technology, logistics arrangements, as well as security.

The leader of the delegation from the African Union says they hope to hear from INEC the lessons it has learnt from the 2023 general election, and strategies in place to ensure that the gains of that election are consolidated, and mistakes are not repeated in 2027.

Other areas of interest to the delegation also include results management, arrangements in place for inclusivity, and how to gain the trust of the electorate.
