Supreme Court Orders Nigerian Govt to Pay LG Allocations Directly

The Supreme Court has ordered all state governors to steer clear of the funds meant for the 774 local government areas of the country declaring that it is unconstitutional for state governors to hold onto funds meant for Local Government administrations.

According to the judgment read this Thursday by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the Supreme Court observed that the state governments’ refusal of financial autonomy for local governments has gone on for over two decades.

Justice Agim says local governments have since stopped receiving the money meant for them from the state governors who act in their stead.

He ruled that the 774 local government councils in the country should henceforth manage their funds themselves.

He also dismissed the preliminary objections of the defendants which include the state governors.
