The Enugu State Government has resolved to establish an Environmental Remediation Trust Fund and the State Security Trust Fund in an effort to put a stop to illegal mining and environmental degradation in the state.
The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kingsley Udeh, said this at the State Executive Council meeting on Monday, explaining that the government will license miners who will contribute an agreed sum of money into the fund for remediation projects that will help to safeguard the environment and ensure that health hazards resulting from the mining activities are mitigated.
The commissioner said this while complaining of the huge environmental damage caused by illegal mining activities such as the contamination of water channels in the state by carcinogenic elements that are cancerous.
