Three persons have lost their lives following the collapse of a three-storey building still under construction at Egbu Umuenem, Otolo Nnewi, in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Eyewitnesses say the building collapsed at about 1am on Sunday morning killing three people, a man and his two sons, who were reportedly sleeping over to begin work at the site the next day.
Other victims who were also trapped in the rubbles were later rescued during a rescue operation and rushed to St. Felix Hospital, Nnewi.
The Anambra State Chairman of Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, Victor Meju, and the Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North LGA, Chris Obiora, visited the scene and explained that several issues such as poor foundation, poor quality of materials, non-approval from relevant regulatory authorities, are among factors that could have led to the building collapse.
Meju says the collapsed building has been sealed-off, and that the owner of the building will be invited for questioning to aid investigation on the cause of the collapse.
