Bangladesh’s opposition leader, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and dozens of members of his party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), have been arrested after violent anti-government protests in the country’s capital, Dhaka.

Reports say tens of thousands of protesters turned out over the weekend, calling for the resignation of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been accused of human rights violations and authoritarianism.

One police officer and one protester were reportedly killed.
