Amnesty International has condemned the Nigeria Police Force over the use of tear gas against people who gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos on Tuesday to commemorate victims of the 2020 #EndSARS protests.
The human rights organisation said the gathering was organised to honour protesters killed during demonstrations against police brutality on 20 October 2020.
In a statement, Amnesty International criticised the police response, saying the use of tear gas showed disregard for the victims and survivors of the crackdown six years ago.
Amnesty International said the incident raised fresh concerns about the protection of citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly in Nigeria.
