One person has been confirmed dead after a four-storey building under construction collapsed on Sunday at Independence Layout, Enugu.

The building, located along Ogbaru Street/Alvan Ikokwu Street, reportedly trapped several persons, with four workers said to have been rescued from the rubble and taken to the Enugu State Teaching Hospital.

Reports say NEMA, the Red Cross, SEMA, the Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority and the Police are currently involved in the rescue operation.

Reports also say the collapse is linked to suspected structural defects, as the site had previously been sealed by the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, ECTDA, following an inspection.
