The African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Rivers State has accused authorities in Ikwerre Local Government Area of intimidating opposition political parties following a ban on public gatherings without written approval from the council chairman.
The party’s Publicity Secretary, Chizy Enyi, made the allegation this Monday, while reacting to the directive issued by Ikwerre Local Government Chairman, Charles Wobodo.
The ADC acknowledged the security challenges in the area but insisted that insecurity should not be used to deny citizens their constitutional rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of association and political participation.
The party also alleged that its members had faced repeated intimidation and disruption of lawful meetings, warning that the directive could weaken democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
