As part of a renewed push to deepen recycling and to keep its city clean, the Lagos State Government has announced an invitation for residents to turn household waste into cash

The Lagos Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, says the “Cash for Trash’’scheme, which is a long-standing initiative in Lagos under the state Environmental Protection Agency, will reward residents every Thursday for bringing in recyclables.

Wahab announced this via his X platform this Monday saying the Recycling Team of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, is currently on ground in Lagos Island, demonstrating how communities can convert recyclable waste into income.

Wahab also posted a video showing LAWMA agents weighing bags of sorted plastics on portable scales and disbursing cash rewards to participants.

Reports say the waste-to-wealth initiative was created to allow residents to get paid in exchange for recyclable waste, thereby reducing the impact of climate change on the state.
